Square me a blanket

1 000 knitted squares transformed into blankets for the '67 Blankets for Madiba' initiative.

MORE than 1 000 knitted squares have been transformed into beautiful knitted blankets for the ’67 Blankets for Madiba’ initiative.

Partnering with the Zululand Observer’s Do I Care Enough (DICE) organisation, the ’67 Blankets for Madiba’, Zululand Region Ambassador, Deidre Bevan recently handed over 32 completed blankets to DICE.

These blankets will be handed out 18 July on Mandela Day to those who do not have the luxury of warm clothing and blankets this winter.

Squares, which were knitted by the public early this year, were given to Bevan and her helping hands who transformed these into colourful, warm blankets.

What started off as a dare, by former personal assistant, Zelda la Grange to the late Nelson Mandela, has sparked a wide-spread national movement, with a footprint now extending to countries such as UK, Australia, Canada, US, India, New Zealand, London, Germany and Cyprus.

‘Sorting out the thousands of squares every winter is sometimes quite daunting, but I am very grateful to my colleague, Barbara Peckham who assisted me in sorting and getting the blankets sewed.

‘This year I have also been assisted by a few of the Matric Interact Club members,’ said Bevan.

‘With more than 2 500 blankets already collected nationally from this initiative, it’s warming to see South Africans join together for a worthy cause.’
