EHS set sights on Durban challenge

EHS first team girls hockey will head into the Spar Aquelle girls hockey finals as an unbeaten side

KNOWN as the team that does not need a GPS system to find the back of a goal box and has dominated U18 girls hockey in Zululand for three consecutive years, Empangeni High School (EHS) have ended their season unbeaten with two trophies in their cabinet.

The 2014 side managed to claim the Saints Challenge crown and Spar Aquelle regional crown, as well as win seven out of seven local games to end their season on a high.

But the team has one final task at hand, which they are training towards.

The squad will head off to Durban to compete in the Spar Aquelle girls hockey finals on 26 and 27 July.

Ten regional winners have been divided into two pools.

‘We managed to end eighth in 2012 and seventh last year. We aim for a fifth or sixth place finish this year,’ said coach Lorna van Greunen.

The team is currently training twice a week, with hopes of continuing in the school holidays.

This year’s side has three key players to spearhead their campaign, namely captain Mari-Lee Visser (KZN Country Districts open ladies team), Kimberley Swan (KZN Country Districts U16) and Anele Dlamini (KZN Coastal U16).

‘I am extremely proud of our achievements this year, as the team took in quite a few youngsters.

‘I am excited about the upcoming talent next year and hope we can build on these achievements and carry on being the top school girls side in Zululand,’ said Van Greunen.
