Missed call could be a scam

People are advised not to answer or return calls from unknown numbers.

THE Hawks and police have issued a warning to the public to be alert and cautious of unknown number missed calls.

Absa Risk has confirmed a new cell phone scam running rife in which recipients receive calls from numbers +375602605281, +37127913091 or any number starting with a dialling code of +375 originating from Belarus and Afghanistan or +371, the dialling code of Latvia.

It is alleged that the phone would only ring once and the callers would hang up leaving a missed call notification message.

If the call is returned the numbers are registered to charge between $15 and $30 and also copy all contact list information within three seconds.

Bank or credit card details saved on the phone are also copied.

People are advised not to answer or return these calls.
