A euphony of musical talent and discipline, the Empangeni High School Marching Band continues to hold its fine tune.
The band began over three decades ago and has grown every year.
Rene Pretorius is currently the band coach and has been at the school for 22 years.
She, along with assistant coach, Philip Joubert, who has been at the school for 32 years, provide the foundation on which the band’s success has been built.
The band members are very dedicated, with 110 teenagers, ranging from Grade 8 to Grade 12, practising every morning.
Ex-band members and music students also contribute by doing some of the musical arrangements for each year’s new programme.
Competitions
The band holds its reputation by taking either first or second place in almost all of the competitions they have taken part in.
They perform for various schools and churches and took part in the street march in both Durban and Richards Bay for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
Among many prestigious events, the band has been invited to take part in is the Europe Band Festival held in Germany this July.
This is a huge honour and they are so privileged to be taking part in such an amazing event.
Their dream is to attend an international event with all 110 band members.
