DEDICATED to saving lives on the country’s coastline and inland waters, the cream of South Africa’s Sea Rescue volunteers met at Station 19 in Richards Bay over the weekend to strategise their efforts at continued operational improvement.
Some 45 delegates, including Station Commanders from the NSRI’s 33 bases, which collectively are manned by almost 1 000 volunteers, gathered to share the latest best practices and discuss a wide range of topics that would enhance their rescue capabilities.
Held every two years, the conference adopted a number of resolutions and directions for the coming year.
In his closing summation, CEO Dr Cleeve Robertson said with regard to training that, ‘the workshop has outlined where our next steps should be in terms of e-learning and experiential learning.
‘We are committed to new technologies, relating to crew and coxswain safety and there is good consensus on a medical and fitness process for crews.
‘We also note the need for head office admin support on operational and business systems, with communication at all levels fundamental to Sea Rescue.
‘The conference is over; now the work begins.’
NSRI brand and station pride were also named as of vital importance as the organisation is dependent on sponsorships, donations and volunteers.
Dr Robertson praised the venue as a prime example, with Richards Bay Station 19 boasting perhaps the finest station in the country, thanks to the sponsors and members who work hard to build the facility.
