THE Richards Bay Station Commissioner has promised stern action after a policeman beat up a motorist in front of his terrified family in an apparent road rage incident on Friday morning.
He allegedly also screamed racial abuse at them and pointed his service pistol at the screaming children, threatening to shoot them.
The incident took place when new arrivals in the city, Joshua and Engela Joubert were taking their 15 year-old daughter and 12 year-old son to school.
‘A white vehicle sat on my tail from Meerensee, so close I could not see the front of his car.
‘Whenever I changed lanes, he also changed and kept aggressively following me,’ said Joshua.
‘This continued along the John Ross highway and soon after I turned right towards town at the Arboretum robots, I stopped.
‘He stopped right behind me, got out and starting fisting me through the open window.
‘Blood flew everywhere and he was swearing and hurling racist abuse at us.
‘The kids were screaming and he went back to his car and came back with a gun, which he pointed at the children.’
After trying unsuccessfully to get the man’s car keys, to prevent him leaving the scene, Joshua drove to the police station where he was amazed to find out that the plain-clothed assailant was a policeman reporting for duty.
The incident was logged and after being treated for his injuries at hospital, Joshua and his family were seen by Brigadier Bongamusa Zondi, who promised a full investigation.
‘Under no circumstances is this kind of behaviour to be tolerated. We are fed up with members who tarnish the name of police.
‘We apologise to the family, especially the traumatised children and assure them that the matter will receive top priority,’ said Zondi.

DON’T stop at only an appology. Sue him. In our town a black policeman shot a white lady for NO reason. He got away with it cause he’s a policeman. Insist on some disceplinary action against him. He now has your number plate and will know where u live. He will target you.
Fire the member use his pension pay out to add to pay the family compensation for trauma ad well as charge member in constitutional court for violating the constitution the goverment in power wrote
I have questions. Was there a case opened of assault and will the police man be charged and will this case go to court.
Some members of the SAPS think they are above the law and can behave as they like. This lawless behaviour flows over to members of the public and to their own family members. In most cases it originates from their negative personal life experience where abuse is a normal occurrence.
Trust we will be fully informed of this idiots name/rank and full details of the investigation. This “officer” should never be allowed to carry a firearm EVER again regardless of the outcome with immediate effect!! Brigadier Zondi please do ensure we can trust our police force!
