MTUBATUBA municipal employees engaged in a peaceful protest yesterday to air their work-related grievances.
According to South African Police Services (SAPS) Communications Officer, Lieutenant Mpontshane, every level of municipal employees, from refuse collectors and street sweepers to administration staff and traffic officers, took part in the protest.
Their grievances included overtime, an unusable vehicle testing station and the provision of employees’ protective clothing.
The SAPS was called to oversee the protest which remained peaceful and was restricted to the interior of the municipality’s chambers.
Mtubatuba Municipality is currently under administration and, according to Lieutenant Mpontshane, employees wanted the administrator to personally meet with them to hear their grievances.
After some tension over his meeting only with provincial staff, the Mtubatuba municipal employees dispersed peacefully.
The municipality’s executive committee was in a meeting on Tuesday afternoon to discuss and resolve the situation.
The municipality declined to comment.
