Mick Kelly Park haunts Empangeni

Empangeni 1 and 2 go down to Unizul and eSikhaweni.

THE lights were on and nobody was home again on Friday evening at Mick Kelly Park, when Empangeni 1 and 2 went down to Unizul and eSikhaweni in their respective matches.

Empangeni 2 and Unizul kicked proceedings off in a Van Rooyen Cup clash, which saw the visitors claim a 24-0 victory.

This clash was a double header between the two outfits, which gave Unizul ten points for their efforts on the night.

Fanelwe Mnguni, Teboho Kilani, Siphesihle Mbambo and Phiwo Ngcobo all crossed over for the Unizul outfit, with Teboho Kilani converting two tries.

Scelo Gamede (forwards) and Sbonelo Makamu (backline) received the men of the matches awards for Empangeni.

Empangeni 1 and eSikhaweni followed in a Stewart Shield encounter, which saw eSikhaweni claim a narrow 24-15 win after a 78th minute try.

The two sides exchanged blows all game long, with the scoreboard reading 15-17 to the visiting side, with the game going into the final minutes, before Philani Bhengu dotted down in the 78th minute to seal the victory for the visiting side.

Corbin Geldenhuys and Bongs Masinga crossed the chalk for the home side, with Robert Snyman kicking one penalty and converting a try to rack the team’s points up to 15.

Jabulani Mnqayi, Simphiwe Makhoba and Philani Bhengu scored for the visitors, with Philani Bhengu kicking three conversions and one penalty to pile up their side’s 24 points.

Lindo Mathenjwa (forwards) and Siyabonga Mathaba (backline) got the men of the matches awards for Empangeni.
