Indian network movement launched

Network of people of Indian origin takes off in Zululand.

CITY of uMhlathuze Mayor Elphas Mbatha has pledged his support for a Zululand chapter of the Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO), an international network for people of Indian origin.

The organisation’s mission is to establish a global Indian community network and monitor and address the interests and concerns of Indian people living abroad.

The local chapter was launched at a function at Protea Hotel The Waterfront in Richards Bay on Tuesday and is being spearheaded by local philanthropist and businessman Ishwar Ramlutchman.

Mayor Mbatha welcomed the initiative and said links with other cultural groups and ethnic backgrounds were important to bring about change.

‘There is much work to be done in South Africa and there is much for your organisation to assist with. During apartheid, blacks, Indians and coloured suffered and now we can create links with other cultural groups and backgrounds to make difference.

‘We appreciate diversity and feel honoured to participate in this launch, and welcome the work that will be done by this organisation,’ he said.

Ramlutchman, who has been involved with GOPIO for over a decade and received several accolades and community service awards, said the network is a one that takes up issues of the Indian Diaspora and attempts to unify the community in its common causes.

‘Since its inception 25 years ago, it has been creating awareness and promoting understanding of issues concerning social, cultural, educational and economic matters of Indian communities around the globe.

‘We are South African first, however we are proud of our Indian heritage and will uphold our cultural beliefs.

‘There are nine councils serving human rights issues, business, culture, academia, media, health services, youth, women and science and technology.
