All sweat and ego

The Empangeni squash and bowling team drew after fierce competition.

IT was all ‘sweat and ego’ when the Empangeni squash team took on the Empangeni bowls team on Friday afternoon at the Empangeni Country Club.

The competition started out on the squash courts where participants played the best of three games.

The highlight on the court was when Shirley Carey used her opponent Shaun Francis to clean the squash floor after demolishing him 2-0.

‘I got set up and put in the number one spot after my provincial squash history. I had all the shots in the book, but my fitness let me down,’ said a disgruntled Francis.

The squash team walked off the courts with a 5-3 lead heading down to the bowling greens.

The bowlers upped their game on the green, where they managed a dominant 17-1 and 22-3 victory to prove that they are ‘kings of the greens’.

When points were added up and put together it came down to a unanimous decision that the competition was a draw.

‘It was great to see such old ballies being able to move around the courts and greens, proving that they still have a little oomph left in them,’ said a spectator.
