Talented vocalist returns to his roots

Don't miss the Musical Supper Theatre on 23 May,

Zululanders have a musical treat in store with talent right on their doorstop.

Felixton College is presenting a Musical Supper Theatre on 23 May, produced by its intrepid Head of Dramatic Arts and Culture Coordinator, Nicholas Wilcox, aka ‘the voice’.

Nicholas is, in fact, a Felixton Old Boy and has returned to teach at his school and use his vocal talent to raise money for the school’s cultural fund, for a digital piano.

He is producing the show together with colleagues Vicky Erasmus and Barbara Owen.

‘Vicky is a musical prodigy who accompanies me on the piano and Barbara is a master of the violin,’ said Nicholas.

‘Together we cover a variety of musical genres and include songs that are both popular and obscure. We like to apply contemporary techniques to the classics and vice versa to reach as broad an audience as possible.’

This musical trio will also be available to sing at other community events.

Music encapsulates everything he thinks and feels and Nicholas fondly recalls his choir teacher, Mrs Debbie Bevis, who was the one who discovered his voice and encouraged him. ‘She is the teacher I remember the best, the one who unlocked the potential I never thought I had’.

His talent was also recognised by the KZN Youth Choir who invited him to join. After he matriculated, Nicholas studied drama at Rhodes University and was a member of the Rhodes Chamber Choir. He graduated and enjoyed a little sojourn in London and after his return, he happened upon his former KZN Youth Choir conductor who invited him to sing with the choir again.

So Nicholas travelled with the choir as lead tenor to Greece in 2011 where the choir won seven gold medals and three gold medals, a silver in Italy.

‘I have sung with the Maritzburg orchestra and was invited to take part in a master class hosted by two international maestros while in Italy,’ said Nicholas.

The experienced songbird, boasting wit, wisdom and harmony, invites everyone to enjoy a melodic interlude at the supper theatre.
