‘Frogman’ Evan strikes gold

Evan Weyermuller won two gold medals while representing team South Africa in Uganda

EVAN Weyermuller’s (16) ‘chlorine diet’ has finally paid off and has seen him living his dream this year, achieving at the highest levels in the swimming pool.

The grade 11 pupil from Richards Bay Christian School recently won two gold medals at the CANA Zone 3 and 4 Championships in Uganda while representing team South Africa.

This local ‘speedo-torpedo’ specialises in breast stroke and has perfected the art in 50m, 100m and 200m events.

Evan achieved full colours for academics and wants to study chemical or electrical engineering in 2016, proving that he is more brain than brawn.

But it is swimming that has stolen his heart since the age of five.

He is currently training with coach Francois Boshoff at Ushaka Swimming Club six days a week.

‘I train for two hours a day, covering five to six kilometres during a typical training session,’ said Evan.

This year has been outstanding for the young talented swimmer. He made the uThungulu swimming team, Level 2 at National Championships Age Group Gala, Youth Nationals, SA team for CANA Zone 3 and 4 in Uganda, Victor Ludorum at KICKSA School Gala and Qualifying for Level 3 at National Age Group Gala.

Record

He broke the 50m breast stroke boys (15-16 years) record at the KICKSA School Gala and the 100m breast stroke record at the NKZN Age Group Gala.

His latest achievement was winning gold in Uganda while swimming for team SA where 11 other countries participated.

He took podium position in the boys (15-16 years) 100m and 200m breast stroke events.

‘We are very proud of him, as he is very diligent and disciplined in everything he does. We acknowledge the gift the God has blessed him with,’ said mom Wendy.

‘I would like to get a medal at Level 3, participate in the Short Course Championships, make top five in the county and compete at the Olympics one day,’ said Evan.

‘My advice is to do the best that you can do in everything that you do in life, as it pays off. Follow your dream and never give up. One will experience setbacks but in the end it is worth it.’
