Heist foiled in Melmoth

Armed men attempted to rob a security vehicle delivering cash to an ATM.

AN UNKNOWN number of armed men attempted to rob a security vehicle delivering cash to an ATM at the Shoprite Shopping Centre at Melmoth on Saturday, at around 10.45am.

Two security officers were carrying money boxes to the ATM door.

One guard went into the centre and another returned to fetch another box.

On his way back to the ATM room he was approached by an armed man ordering him to put down the money box.

He looked behind him and saw several more armed men.

The guard was ordered to open the money box but did not have the key. He was told to get the key from the other guard in the ATM room.

The guard then heard someone saying they must shoot him.

A shot was fired, missing his right leg, but penetrating his trousers.

The armed men then grabbed the money box and ran away towards the exit of the centre.

The security vehicle driver fired shots at the fleeing men and the man carrying the money box dropped it and fled.

It is believed that they drove off in a Ford Fiesta with ND number plates, which was later recovered.

One of the suspects (49) from Ulundi was also later identified and arrested with a 9mm pistol of which the number was scratched off.
