Minerals mine takes breath of fresher air

A new ultramodern monitoring system will keep things fresh and airy at Richards Bay Minerals (RBM)

A NEW state-of-the-art station named ‘Dubu’ will keep a close eye on the air quality at local mineral sands mine, Richards Bay Minerals (RBM).

According to the company, the monitoring system has been introduced as part of a wider air quality improvement programme set to run for the next five years.

It is equipped with instruments to estimate levels of particulate matter of size 10 and 2.5 microns (PM10 & PM2.5), Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2) for which emission standards are set in terms of the National Air Quality Act.

‘These results are used as a basis for emission modelling and to ensure that RBM is compliant with legal requirements and above all, to ascertain that the ambient air is conducive,’ RBM Communities and Corporate Relations General Manager Fundi Dlamini.

‘In addition to air quality measuring, the station is also equipped with weather condition measuring instruments to factor in the effect of air dispersion and particularly to determine possible direction of pollutants.

‘No other station within Richards Bay and surroundings is as fully equipped as Dubu.’
