Bay cop in stable condition

Boyfriend in the dock after Bay cop shooting

A BOYFRIEND, accused of shooting a Richards Bay police officer after stealing her State firearm two weeks ago, is due to reappear at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

Siboniso Ngidi (28) of Gingindlovu faces charges of attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and robbery after firing four shots at the police constable at Ngwelezane.

The 27-year-old police constable is still recovering at Netcare The Bay Hospital in Richards Bay.

Stationed at the Port of Richards Bay, the cop was off duty and had been travelling with her boyfriend toward Dumisani Makhaye Village on 8 April when the couple reportedly had an argument.

She pulled over on Ngwelezane Road and the two reportedly got out of the vehicle at about 4.30pm.

The suspect allegedly overpowered the officer and disarmed her of her service pistol after grabbing her handbag.

He then shot her four times before escaping on foot with the victim’s firearm.

She was rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Netcare The Bay Hospital.

Members of Empangeni Crime Intelligence pursued the suspect following a tip-off and after seven hours, eventually traced him on foot to Gingindlovu, close to his homestead. He was found in possession of the pistol he allegedly stole from the officer.

Ngidi made his first appearance on 10 April and the case was remanded for further investigation to 22 April.
