JOB losses do not only impact one person but an entire family with about four to seven dependents.
The number of retrenchments at BHP Billiton’s Bayside Aluminium will be finalised soon and the ripple effect of those job losses will be felt throughout the community.
Apart from the hundreds of employees affected, suppliers, contractors and downstream businesses in Richards Bay will also feel the harsh domino effect.
This is the time when the business fraternity and community of Richards Bay must stand together.
The ‘uBuntu’ principle that is so often spoken, about must now be put into practice.
Families will need support from religious and social organisations, neighbours, loved ones and friends.
Businesses will need to support other fledgling entrepreneurs, who will feel the economic pinch and possibly fold. Rather support local business.
We should never feel victorious when others fall around us.
Instead, this is the time when we support our peers. This could happen to any of us in the future, so let us rally as a community and help the hundreds of people, who will soon be without a job.
These are hard economic times. But with the right support structure and love within a community, we can survive.
