Local fighters on international stage

KwaDukuza karatekers are in Tokyo with their sights set on gold.

EIGHT KwaDukuza karatekers have jetted off to Tokyo to participate in the prestigious Kyokushin Iko 2014 International Friendship Tournament – with their sights set on gold.

KwaDukuza Mayor Ricardo Mthembu joined the fighters on Tuesday for an official send-off.

‘Nothing breeds success like success. We are now assured that we have a strong team of fighters who will place us on the global map. We are confident that they have the potential to do well against the international heavyweights,’ said Mthembu.

Senior fighter Fisokuhle Mhlongo (35) has competed in various international tournaments before in Russia and Kuwait and tasted sweet success when he won the open section in the Russian Cup in 2001.

The Kyokushin iko tournament is a traditional Japanese event held once every 10 years.

This trip was funded by KwaDukuza Municipality following a decision taken by Council.
