Evan almighty

Richards Bay teen in SA swim team.

LOCAL swimmer Evan Weyermüller shot off the starting blocks like a bullet out of a gun barrel at the recent National Championships, to earn himself a spot in the SA swimming team that will participate in the 12th annual CANA Zone 3 and 4 Invitational Swimming Championships in Kampala, Uganda.

The gala takes place from 24 to 27 April.

Confédération Africaine de Natation (CANA) is the African Swimming Confederation and is the continental association charged with overseeing swimming for Africa within Fédération Internationale de Natation (FINA).

A total of 24 African nations will participate at the gala.

Evan received this great news last week when he was participating at the SA National Aquatic Championships and Commonwealth Trials held in Durban.

Evan swam a Youth National qualifying time for 100m breaststroke at the recent SA Level 2 gala in Sasolburg, and was therefore permitted a late entry for last week’s National Championships.

The Commonwealth Trials coincided with the Championships, resulting in a great platform to gain valuable racing experience, where Evan competed with the top swimmers in SA.

The Grade 11 pupil at Richards Bay Christian School has been sweating it out and putting the hard yards in the water under uShaka Swimming Club coach Francois Boshoff.

‘Evan is diligent and hardworking, both in and out the pool. He is a quiet leader, choosing to lead from the front as well as by example. I am sure this is only the tip of the ice berg as we will still hear a lot from this talented athlete,’ said Boshoff.

Sponsorship is needed for Evan to get to Kampala.

  1. Evan had an amazing experience and did very well in his two races – Gold in both the 100m and 200m breaststroke, bringing it home for South Africa and Richards Bay! Fantastic news :)
