Bay cop shot after lovers’ quarrel

Boyfriend shoots Bay cop four times after ‘squabble’

A RICHARDS Bay police officer is fighting for her life at Netcare The Bay Hospital after her boyfriend shot her four times with a State firearm in Ngwelezane on Tuesday afternoon.

The constable, who is stationed at the Port of Richards Bay, was off duty and had been travelling with her boyfriend toward Dumisani Makhaye Village when the couple reportedly had an argument.

She pulled over on Ngwelezane Road and the two reportedly got out of the vehicle at about 4.30pm.

According to police, the suspect allegedly overpowered the officer and disarmed her of her service pistol after grabbing her handbag.

He then shot her four times before escaping on foot with the victim’s firearm.

She was rushed to Ngwelezana Hospital in a critical condition before being transferred to Netcare The Bay Hospital.

Members of Empangeni Crime Intelligence pursued the suspect following a tip-off and after seven hours, eventually traced him on foot at Gingindlovu, close to his homestead.

He was found in possession of the pistol he allegedly stole from the officer.

The 27-year-old suspect will appear at the Empangeni Magistrate’s Court today (Thursday) on charges of attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearm and robbery.

KZN Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni welcomed the swift arrest made by the local Crime Intelligence members on Wednesday.

‘We condemn the shooting of the police officer and will ensure this case is thoroughly investigated.

‘The police will get to the bottom of the argument that led to the shooting,’ said Ngobeni.
