Transnet statement on the oil spill at the Port of Richards Bay on behalf of Preston Khomo, Port Manager
An oil leak from a pipeline at the Richards Bay Joint Bunker Services terminal (Engen) has been contained. The port is in operation and identified areas have full secondary containment. The following has been accomplished:
*The formation of integrated and multi-disciplinary teams, working together towards managing the oil spill.
* We have increased the number of field specialists and management of resources.
* We have established a Joint Operations Committee (JOC) that meets twice a day to share updates and new developments.
* Engen has mobilised environmental consultants to establish environmental impacts.
* There has been an established application of 24hr clean-up activities.
We would like to give assurance that we are making every effort to bring back operations to its normality and also ensuring that ecological sensitive areas receive utmost priority in terms of spill containment.
