School rookie reporter on the beat
Jessica Bakken (17) writes up the next scoop for the Zululand Observer publications during her school holidays
THE Zululand Observer welcomed Grade 11 Grantleigh College pupil Jessica Bakken to the Richards Bay offices on Wednesday where she immediately put pen to paper to report on the region’s latest news.
In just three days, Jessica wrote nine pieces for both the Zululand Observer and Bay Watch newspapers during her school holidays.
‘I’ve certainly learnt a lot,’ she said.
‘It’s helped my decision to one day become a journalist.
‘I also did a tour of the ZO printing press which was so impressive.
‘Just to see how a newspaper is put together on deadline day – it’s such an organised operation.
‘But my favourite part was doing the investigative work and finding out more about choosing an angle for a story.
‘I definitely want to come back during my next holiday break!’ she said.
