Bay boys set early pace

Richards Bay beats Vryheid 16-11.

THE ‘Bay Boys’ rugby squads got the season going with well deserved victories on Saturday.

Travelling to Vryheid, Richards Bay Rugby Club’s second team expected a tough assignment.

However, from the kick-off the Bay side took total control of the game and scored three excellent tries in the first half. Two were scored by wing Wiseman Nxumalo and one by speedster Kobus Duvenhage.

The match was controlled beautifully by flyhalf Brendon Beukes. Vryheid did manage to score a try in the dying minutes of the first half to bring the score to 24-7.

At the restart Vryheid soon dispelled any complacency among the visitors.

They ran in two tries and notched one penalty to narrow the gap, but two penalties for Richards Bay allowed them to claim a 30-24 win.

Richards Bay’s first team also found the going tough, with good defence from both sides keeping the score at 3-3 at the interval. Richards Bay’s penalty was scored by JP Rossouw.

In the second half a well executed backline attack involving flyhalf Coenie Vermaak, José Rodrigues and JP Rossouw saw Rodrigues cross the line for the crucial try that set up the Bay’s 16-11 victory.

Coach Graham Beukes said he was happy with the result and that the boys remain upbeat about making an impression in the league which starts on Saturday.
