Golf frenzy sets Zululand courses on fire

Golfers from all over Zululand on the fairway.

THE ZULULAND golf clubs all held their annual championship tournaments during the weekend.

Although the ladies golf sections appear to be battling in most clubs, Melmoth Golf Club had four golfers playing for the title which was won by Sandra Grobbelaar after beating overnight leader, Mona Joubert.

At the Richards Bay Country Club, Twiggy van der Merwe on 172 points was the ladies’ gross winner and Kathy de Gasperi the ladies’ nett winner with 148 points. Debbie van der Merwe won the title with 187 points at Empangeni. While at Mtunzini the lady champ on 181 points and nett winner on 145 points was Bobbye Jackson after playing an amazing round of golf.

In eShowe The B-Division Champion also took the Club Champion title.

George Pieterson was firing on all pistons and put in a score of 167 to take the title.

In second place, with a gross of 170 was Andy Dahl and tied third on 174 were Pat Mclaverty and Neville Williams.

There were no surprises at Amatikulu Golf Club with two-handicap Samuel Gauma taking the honours with 148 points, way clear of the field. His closest rival was Mark Pearce on 163 points.

The Empangeni Country Club A-division winner Greig Smith also took the Club Champion title with the B-Division winner Andy Ndlovu on 163 points and Clement Biyela taking the C-Division.

Richards Bay Country Club had Ettiene Jonck take the men’s gross winner title on 147 points and Willie Petzer grabbed the men’s nett winner trophy on 143 points in what can only be described as a fantastic two days of golf .
