Juniors fare well at volleyball tournament
The uThungulu junior womens volleyball team were placed second at the Inter District Volleyball Tournament.
UTHUNGULUs junior women’s volleyball team flew the district’s flag high in Durban on Saturday after narrowly losing in the final of the junior men and women’s Inter-District Volleyball Tournament.
This year’s tournament, hosted by KZN Volleyball, was held at the University of Kwazulu-Natal’s Indoor Sports Complex.
Uthungulu District was one of eight KZN districts that competed for the title, ‘Junior Volleyball Champions’.
Uthungulu District was up against neighbouring districts, Umkhanyakude, Amajuba , Durban, Stanger, Verulem and Ugu.
The district was drawn against Umkhanyakude, Durban and Verulem in the women category.
The junior men were up against Ugu, Durban and Amajuba, but bowed out of the tournament after dropping sets against against all three districts.
The junior women fared well, winning their round robin games against Durban and Verulam and were placed runner-up in the pool, giving them a spot in the semi-final. In the best-of-three setter challenge, the junior women managed to end the game against Ugu with a convincing two sets win, beating their rivals to reach the finals.
The final championship game against Amajuba was closely contested in the first set, but points were dropped when the Amajuba centre attacker showed perfect control and placement of the ball to all corners of the court.
Unfortunately fatigue kicked in and the junior woman dropped the final sets losing 25 -18 and 25 -15.
Overall the team’s performance was commendable and their effort and hard work achieved a number two ranking in the tournament.
