Buses back on roads in KwaMthethwa

Commuters stranded as Uthungulu Bus drivers strike

IT was all smiles and praise for the KwaMthethwa commuters when they saw buses streaming in to ferry them at Richards Bay and Empangeni Bus ranks last week.

This after an almost two-week Uthungulu Bus drivers’ strike. Bus drivers downed tools because of their unhappiness with their employer.

After lengthy negotiations with the KZN Transport Department, which took place on Tuesday afternoon at their Empangeni Regional offices, it was decided Ikhwezi Bus Company must pitch in to transport the stranded passengers, while Uthungulu Bus Company Director and CEO Mduduzi Sithole were given 30 days to sort out the problem.

As word of the buses return spread around the reserves, hundreds of commuters waited patiently at their bus stops for the buses to carry them to their places of work and school on Thursday morning.
