Carnival time in the Bay

Multicultural festival in Richards Bay to commemorate Human Rights Day

FESTIVITIES will flood the city this week as a multi-cultural festival, ‘Viva uMhlathuze Street Parade’ in commemoration of Heritage Day, kicks off this Friday in Richards Bay.

Spearheaded by community leader and Councillor Nellenie Naidoo, the week-long showcase, backed by the uThungulu District and City of uMhlathuze municipalities, is supported by various stakeholders, including government departments, businesses, youth and community groups, charity organisations and religious leaders.

A street parade and float procession will be staged on Friday, with a top class line-up of events and activities throughout the week.

‘The event will unite people and provide a platform to celebrate and respect diverse cultures, honour Human Rights Day, embrace diversity and build a sustainable nation and strengthen democracy,’ said Naidoo.

At the launch last week, uThungulu Deputy Mayor Thulani Mashaba commended all involved in rolling out this initiative to celebrate diversity and strengthen our young democracy.

‘It is important for our people within the district be to involved in this event as we celebrate 20 years of democracy.

‘We must talk about our journey, celebrate it and all race groups must do it together,’ he said.
