Yachts prepare for Inhaca race

Yachties get ready for the big island race

THE Zululand Yacht Club (ZYC) is feverishly finalising arrangements for its 24th annual Inhaca to Richards Bay Yacht Race.

Before the yachtsmen get down to the serious stuff of racing on Friday 18 April, there is much camaraderie and fun to be had on the tiny island of Inhaca in Mozambique.

Last year 36 yachts took part in the race home, mainly from Zululand and Durban, and the ZYC is hoping to attract yachts from further afield in the years to come.

Aside from a few days’ rest and recuperation prior to the event, the race organisers provide the traditional beach braai and briefing party where many sore heads need to be nursed before the start.

A new tradition was started last year with a challenge soccer match with the local residents of Inhaca island.

This goes a long way to cementing relationships with our neighbours, as well as some much needed exercise for the yachties.

For more race details contact the Zululand Yacht Club at 035 7880256 or info@zyc.co.za or visit the website www.zyc.co.za to download the Notice of Race and entry forms.

Sponsorship opportunities exist for those wanting to support local sporting and outdoor recreation.
