A FEW months after starting karate – at the age of five – Megashnee Mudaly took part in the JKA (Japanese Karate Association) Nationals in Johannesburg.
She was placed third in the five to six years white belt division, and never looked back, taking part in national as well as local competitions, before achieving her red belt at the age of 10.
In 2010, Megashnee was selected to be part of the South African Team that participated in the international ISKF (International Shotokan Karate Federation) competition in the Phillippines, but sadly, was unable to attend.
‘In 2012 – after 11 years of training – I achieved my Black Belt in Karate and on the same day took part in the ISKF National Competition in Johannesburg, where I came third in my division,’ she said proudly.
‘At the ISKF Master Camp in 2013, I passed my junior referee examination with flying colours and I am now a fully qualified junior referee who will take part as well as acting as a referee at the 2013 ISKF national competition in Johannesburg!’
She currently holds four bronze medals, 15 silver medals and 36 gold medals as well as numerous trophies.
‘I believe that karate has given me the confidence, discipline and perseverance which I never had as a child. It allowed me to stand up for myself, to take responsibility for my actions and to respect everyone, even people who have done wrong to me.’
‘I am proud of my achievements and know they will not be my last as I intend to follow in both my brothers’ footsteps and open up my own karate school for children.’
