OWING to the decrease of sports activities in the area and poor attendance at the uThungulu District mayoral games, various sports federations met to find resolutions at the Umhlathuze Sports Indaba held at the Richards Bay Civic Centre on Saturday.
Heads of sports organisations under the Umhlathuze Municipality umbrella addressed the conference on different sporting codes including rugby, football, boxing, volleyball and netball.
It was discovered that young people were losing interest in basketball and netball, while karate remained the most popular sport in the district.
Umhlathuze Sports and Recreation chairperson Roger Ngcobo said the aim of the Indaba was to brainstorm and find solutions on how to improve sport in the area.
‘We want to involve people in sport, especially young people. We decided to have this conference so that we can find out some of the issues federations are faced with and find solutions,’ said Ngcobo.
UThungulu Sports and Recreation Nonhlahla Ndlela highlighted the importance of reviving sporting activities through outreach programmes and school sports.
‘Our aim this year is to promote sport in schools. We want everybody to involved and be active. We also promote health living through sports,’ she said.
