First rabies case for 2014
The dog was euthanised and the brain sent for laboratory tests.
AFTER a quiet start to 2014, uThungulu has registered its first positive rabies case for the year.
A dog has been diagnosed in the rural area near eShowe.
There were changes in the dog’s behaviour with abnormal barking, not eating and hydrophobia (fear of water – a characteristic symptom of rabies).
The dog was euthanised and the brain sent for laboratory tests.
There was no human contact. The dog had never been vaccinated.
The results proved positive.
The rabies vaccination campaign will begin in the Umlalazi area on Monday, 3 March.
Details of the areas covered by the campaign will be made known soon.
Pet owners are encouraged to vaccinate their animals at a private vet, the SPCAs or during these campaigns.
The low incidence of rabies can be attributed to the public’s positive attitude towards fighting the disease and supporting vaccination campaigns.
