School funds raided

Another setback for iKati Primary School

WEEKS after the iKati Primary School’s administration building went up in smoke, leaving pupils with no stationery, the school is now faced with another dilemma.

The senior School Governing Body (SGB) member has been accused of fraudulent activities, including stealing school money.

This has come to light after Principal Ntombifuthi Mpanza opened a case of theft at the Richards Bay SAP on 1 February.

Mpanza said the man was responsible for paying the school’s municipal water account, but it was never settled.

`We have a high water account that we were trying to pay off, and he was the person responsible to pay that bill. In October last year, I realised something was wrong.`

Mpanza said she had the ‘shock of her life’ when enquiring about the school’s account at the municipality. She discovered that for October, only R1 000 was paid instead of the R8 000 she authorized.

`When I questioned him about the receipts, he promised to give them to me, but this never happened.’

A total of R12 000 has not been accounted for.

Three weeks ago, the school`s administration block was set on fire.

School stationery and other administration files burnt to ashes, and the police have not ruled out arson.

On Tuesday, the principal told the Zululand Observer she received a cellphone message revealing the identity of the mastermind behind the fire.

Richards Bay police spokesperson Captain Debbie Ferreira confirmed a case of theft was opened and that both cases were being investigated.
