THE prestigious 2014 SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament will officially kick off on Saturday 22 February in Newcastle, when three times champions Ferrum High School hosts the first tournament in their region for the year.
Grantleigh College will host this year’s competition on Saturday 12 May for the Zululand region. Regional winners will progress to the finals which will be played in Durban in July.
Empangeni High School (EHS) has won the Zululand regionals for the past two years and will certainly be looking to do it again this year.
‘I am delighted the tournament has come into its own,’ said Tournament Director, Les Galloway.
‘The hockey that we have seen the past three years has greatly improved and this can only bode well for the future of KZN Hockey.
‘The combination of the competitiveness and enjoyment of these regionals is a pleasure to witness.’
The tournament, that takes place in 10 regions in KwaZulu-Natal, highlights first team girls’ hockey.
Other regions include Southern Natal, Durban Central, Durban North, Pinetown/Highway, Pietermaritzburg North, Pietermaritzburg South, Inland and Northern Natal.
The finals will be played at Thomas More College and St Mary’s DSG on the 26 and 27 July.
MD of SPAR, Rob Philipson said, ‘Our SPAR KZN Regional Hockey Tournament has become a highlight not only in the KZN school sports calendar, but in our sporting calendar as well.
‘These young ladies are the future of our South African Women’s team and we are delighted to play a small role in moulding some of the country’s next top players.’
