Traditional leader challenges counterparts to help needy

‘As traditional leaders, we realise the importance of helping the poor'

INKOSI Mandla Mkhwanazi of the Mkhwanazi Tribal Authority in KwaDlangezwa, has challenged his counterparts to play a pivotal role in the fight against the spread of Covid-19, and to help needy community members who are struggling to make ends meet during lockdown.

Mkhwanazi and his tribal council last week embarked on an awareness campaign to educate communities in all 15 villages under his authority on the danger of Covid-19, and the preventative measures people should take to protect themselves.

He also distributed 400 food parcels.

‘Since the introduction of the lockdown, the poor have been badly affected. ‘This is especially so in our rural area where unemployment is high,’ Mkhwanazi said.

Mkhwanazi thanked all Izinduna, local business people and the Inkosi Phalane Community Trust board members for supporting the initiative.

‘As traditional leaders, we realise the importance of helping the poor.

‘We know that the government and local municipality are also doing so, but we realise we also need to stand up and play our part,’ he said.

uMhlathuze Mayor, Mdu Mhlongo, applauded the initiative and encouraged everybody who can afford to assist, to lend a helping hand.
