Electrical fire outbreak at Bay smelter
No injuries reported after electrical fire at Hillside Smelter main substation
A THICK cloud of smoke hovered over Hillside Smelter in Richards Bay on Monday evening after an electrical fire outbreak on the premises.
According to BHP Billiton Aluminium SA’s Head of External Affairs Aroon Patel there was an electrical fire in one of the transformers at the Hillside main substation.
The fire was contained, brought under control and no-one was injured.
On Tuesday it was reported that there was only localised impact on equipment and processes were in place to stabilise the plant and continue with production.
