Road closure looms
BHP Billiton starts civil work on a harbour intersection
CONSTRUCTION on the West Central Arterial and Harbour Arterial intersection will start on Monday, warned the City of uMhlathuze Transport, Roads and Stormwater Section Head Jogie Naidoo.
BHP Billiton has proposed to undertake the rehabilitation work and appointed Scribante Construction to execute the project, expected to be completed by 7 April.
‘Maintenance in West Central Arterial will be done in half widths under traffic supervision, but Harbour Arterial will be done in full width and necessitates road closure,’ said Naidoo.
‘We urge motorists to be patient during the two-month construction period.’
BHP Billiton Head of External Affairs Aroon Patel said the task is not only to rebuild the road to its initial design standards, but also to improve the roads’ storm water systems and signalisation of the intersection.
‘The benefits will be a much-improved safer road surface for all road users under general conditions, but especially when it rains,’ said Patel.
‘BHP Billiton supports this project to lower the road-related risks of metal transportation between our sites and the Richards Bay Harbour.’
