Richards Bay women’s group addresses mask shortages

The Umhlathuze Hindu Development Committee's women's group challenges community to join their mask sewing campaign

TAKING proactive measures to help alleviate the shortage of masks as the Covid-19 pandemic advances, the Umhlathuze Hindu Development Committee (UHDC) women’s group took on an initiative to sew masks for free distribution to essential front line workers in the Zululand area.

As a seva (service to mankind) initiative on behalf of the Hindu community, more than 800 masks have already been distributed since the start of lockdown. The target is at least 2 000 masks.

The completed masks have mainly been distributed to the Brackenham and Meerensee clinics, medical research teams, SAPS, Netcare The Bay Hospital, Queen Nandi Regional Hospital and to local supermarket employees.

UHDC has extended a friendly challenge to Hindu organisations and individuals countrywide to do their bit and join the sewing challenge.

They are sharing their simple pattern which can be washed and re-used.

The material costs R3.50 and includes a double layer of polycotton with a vilene interfacing and elastic at the ends. WhatsApp 061 4284483 if you would like a copy of the pattern.

UHDC initiatives are made possible through the support of generous monthly donors.
