St Lucia residents hard at work making masks

St Lucia residents have challenged other Zululand towns to do the same

WHILE the local tourism industry has been brought to a halt by the national and international Covid-19 pandemic lockdown, St Lucia residents are keeping themselves busy making face masks for distribution among the wider community.

Initiated by the town’s Ratepayers’ Association members on 3 April, the ‘let’s make masks’ campaign quickly gained traction as material was donated for the cause by townsfolk. Resident seamstresses put up their hands to sew and even husbands got involved in cutting the fabric.

With six women already sewing and a further three to start soon, more than 200 masks have been made, with many more in the pipeline as the target is 1 000.

All donated materials have been washed and disinfected, so is hygienically safe for the task at hand.

The aim behind the project is to ensure the hygienic safety of residents, staff and community members in St Lucia and surrounds.

St Lucia has challenged other towns in Zululand to emulate this initiative, with the hope that its ripple effect will ensure the safety of everyone, both rural and urban.
