NSRI Richards Bay attends to ill crew member aboard vessel

The medics aboard the vessel were briefed and they carried out an assessment on the patient

RICHARDS Bay NSRI Station 19 swung into action on Saturday when they were called to evacuate an ill crew member from a vessel docked outside the port.

The 31-year-old Filipino crewman was suffering a medical complaint (not Covid-19 related), aboard a bulk carrier at anchorage off-shore of Richards Bay.

Sea Rescue was activated shortly after 6am, working with port security and health officials.

The Spirit of Richards Bay was launched with its duty crew and two Netcare 911 rescue paramedics.

The paramedics boarded the ship and treated the patient before evacuating him from the vessel.

‘The patient was secured into a Stokes basket stretcher and transferred onto our craft,’ said Jacques Kruger, NSRI Station 19 station commander.

‘In the care of the paramedics, he was brought to our base without incident and transported via ambulance in a stable condition to hospital for further medical care.

‘Later in the day the crewman was released from hospital in good health and transported back to the ship.’
