Richards Bay businessman arrested for selling cigarettes

Richards Bay SAPS members on routine patrol found a man in possession of two cartons of cigarettes purchased at a local business

CONDUCTING patrols in the Richards Bay central business district on Friday to clamp down on businesses and individuals contravening the lockdown regulations, police arrested one businessman for the sale of cigarettes and four others for gathering in a public place on Friday.

Richards Bay SAPS members on routine patrol found a man in possession of two cartons of cigarettes purchased at a local business.

The 45-year-old business owner was found to be in violation of the regulations, charged and released on bail over the weekend. He is expected to appear in court later this week.

Meanwhile, four men were arrested for having a picnic near the uMhlathuze municipal offices in Richards Bay.

They were released on R1 500 bail each and will appear in court on 21 April.

Spokesperson for Richards Bay SAPS, Captain Debbie Ferreira, emphasised that the aim of implementing the law was a measure to curb the spread of Covid -19 and urged the public to comply.
