Richards Bay blood bank extends operating hours as stocks run low
Blood donors can still donate blood, but by appointment only

DESPITE the national lockdown, the South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is a critical service and in need of regular and ongoing blood donor support.
To adhere to social distancing rules and to limit groups of people congregating, the Richards Bay blood bank has extended its operating hours and put extra hygiene measures in place.
Donors can visit the centre from 8am to 5pm Mondays to Fridays, and from 8am to 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays and public holidays they are closed.
Regular donors will receive an SMS from the SANBS marketing team encouraging them to set up an appointment to donate blood.
Those who do not receive the SMS can contact the Richards Bay branch on 035 7893610 to confirm an appointment.
Donors who have travelled internationally over the past three weeks or who have come into contact with someone who has, or who are exhibiting flu-like symptoms or shortness of breath, are asked to exclude themselves..
Blood donations have dropped drastically in recent weeks and with national stocks at 3.9 days’ supply and platelet stocks at 0.3 days’ supply, levels are critically low.
