Roads are relatively quiet but people still appear to be panic buying

TODAY (Friday) marks day one of the 21-day nationwide shutdown to combat the coronavirus outbreak in SA, but are people taking it seriously?

Shops 

The ZO visited the Empangeni and Richards Bay central business districts this morning, where most supermarkets appeared to be relatively busy. Store employees told us that many people were still panic buying.

All non-essential stores in Richards Bay and Empangeni were closed as per the lockdown rules.

Roads

Traffic on roads eased from 10pm last night.

Few vehicles were spotted travelling between Empangeni and Richards Bay this morning, and no pedestrians were seen in central parts of town.

Disobeying the rules

Some residents in Empangeni suburbs still chose to go for their daily run, ignoring the rules that jogging and the walking of dogs is strictly prohibited during the lockdown.

Some residents in Empangeni townships chose to spend their last night partying with friends, well into the early hours of this morning.

We asked Zululanders how day one of the lockdown fared. While many adhered to the president’s call, others seemed to be flagrantly ignoring the lockdown rules…..
