Rhino poacher suspects confronted on N2
Searching the vehicle, officers found a bag with three knives and a silencer underneath the car
VIGILANT KwaMsane police members recovered a rifle with a silencer and knives in a vehicle which was abandoned by two suspects along the N2 in the Mfekayi area on Wednesday morning.
Crime prevention members were conducting a routine patrol along the highway when they spotted two suspicious looking occupants in an Isuzu bakkie.
uMkhanyakude cluster police spokesperson, Captain Jabulani Mdletshe, said that when the police flagged down the vehicle, the two suspects alighted from the vehicle and ran away.
‘Searching the vehicle, officers found a bag with three knives and a silencer underneath the car. They also recovered a 303 rifle with 10 live rounds of ammunition.
‘We suspect that these men are involved in rhino poaching,’ said Mdletshe.
He added that an investigation is still under way and no arrest has been made so far.
