KZN police crackdown on illegal firearms

POLICE officers are out in full force across KZN in a bid to clamp down on people carrying illegal weapons.
Operations during February led to the arrest of 145 people found with illegal weapons and ammunition, with 135 firearms and more than 1 000 rounds of ammunition seized.
Among the firearms seized were 119 pistols, five rifles, seven shotguns and four homemade firearms.
‘Citizens play a vital role by informing police of criminals who are in possession of illegal firearms,’ said KZN police commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula.
‘The minister of police has by means of publication of a notice in the Government Gazette declared an amnesty period of six months during which illegal firearms can be handed in. This will be valid until 31 May.
‘The objective of the amnesty is to reduce the large pool of illegal or unwanted firearms, ammunition and or firearm parts that are in circulation,’ said Jula.
‘We once again call on citizens to make use of this amnesty period to surrender illegaly or unwanted firearms and ammunition without fear of being prosecuted.
‘There will, however, be no indemnity for owners or people in possession of firearms found to have been used to commit crimes such as murder, robbery and hijacking.’
