A VELDENVLEI petrol station became the third garage hit by gun-wielding robbers in the last three months in Richards Bay.
Five armed suspects arrived at the service station at around 2am on Saturday, forcing a petrol attendant into the convenience store where nine other staff members on duty were gathered.
One of the men assaulted the shop’s cashier while the other men grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash as well as cigarettes and cool drinks.
The teller sustained minor injuries and the robbers escaped on foot.
‘We urge all service station owners and employees to be on high alert for suspicious groups of people in the early hours of the morning,’ said Richards Bay SAPS spokesperson Debbie Ferreira.
‘This is the third case reported after two Alton garages were robbed in recent months.
‘The Richards Bay SAPS detective unit is investigating the matter.’
