King Cetshwayo District pupils’ robotics olympiad

The Olympiad hosted under the theme 'Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure' is organised by AlgoAtWork in partnership with Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre

LEARNERS in the King Cetshwayo District are being challenged to take part in the Fourth Industrial Revolution by participating in the very first Robotics Olympiad.

The Olympiad hosted under the theme ‘Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure’ is organised by AlgoAtWork in partnership with Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.

The competition, set to take place on 21 March at the shopping centre, is open to learners as young as eight-years-old and up to 18-years-old.

‘A school can have more than one team of participants, with each team having a minimum of two and a maximum of four members.

‘Anyone who can form a team can enter. There is no need to be endorsed by a school or any public or private institution,’ said AlgoAtWork’s Langa Zulu.

Each team will have to fill in an entry form which can be obtained at The Boardwalk Inkwazi Tourism and Information Hub outside Woolworths and submit it before 28 February.

‘As part of the competition, teams will have to design and develop a robot excavator controlled by syringe.

‘The robot will have to be ready for demonstration before or on the Olympiad day.

‘It should be able to move, pick up an object (an empty can) and be controlled manually. Materials can be sourced from old cardboard and syringes.

‘Participants will not be supplied with materials; they need to source the required materials themselves. However, the Richards Bay Industrial Development Zone (RBIDZ) Technohub in Meerensee will be available on request where necessary, for the building and team gathering processes,’ said Zulu.

‘Individual and team problem-solving challenges will also be undertaken on the day of the Olympiad.’

Prizes up for grabs include virtual reality headset and headphones.
