Micro farming at local school
Children are taught how to grow their own vegetables, which they can sell to others or use for the school’s feeding scheme
LOCAL business SME Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, is supporting Floraton Primary School in Aquadene to roll out its vegetable garden project.
They enlisted the assistance of The Farmer Kids Programme, which presented a one-day workshop facilitated by
businessman Steven Barnard to teach pupils and teachers how to create a home garden to feed themselves, their communities and the needy.
Focused on micro farming, the simple method is child and environmentally friendly, using cost effective methods as
most of the materials used are recyclable items such as egg cartons, used tyres and 2-litre cold drink bottles.
SME Richards Bay Director, Charl Rossouw, said they have assisted the school over the past 18 months by revamping classrooms, infrastructure, supporting their feeding scheme with donations of new stoves and now assisting with their vegetable gardens.
‘Children are taught how to grow their own vegetables, which they can sell to others or use for the school’s feeding
scheme.
‘While launching The Farmer Kids Programme at this school, we are also looking forward to helping other schools initiate this project as well.’
Welcoming the support and generous contributions from SME, Principal Denise Williams said the school has always
wanted to undertake a garden project, and when SME offered its support, she jumped at the opportunity.
‘We are so grateful for all the help and investment SME has made into the school and we are looking forward to earning a bit of money from our fresh produce and also supporting our feeding scheme’ said Williams.
