Stories making headlines across SA this week

A round-up of the country’s top stories of the week

THE week in review, here is a round up of the most-read stories from across the country.

Jacob Zuma

Making headlines not only in South Africa but globally, Jacob Zuma’s infamous sick note sparked an outcry as it brought a halt to court proceedings against the former president.
Senior state prosecutor Advocate Billy Downer asked the court to issue a warrant of arrest.

Eskom

Government, business and unions have reached an in-principle agreement to use voluntary mobilisation of savings, such as pension money, to assist Eskom and invest in infrastructure.

From the courts

President Cyril Ramaphosa has given the go-ahead to set up special sexual offences courts with the hope of these new courts leading to more prosecutions, minimising secondary trauma for victims.

National currency

For a number of reasons including worldwide panic over the Coronavirus and South Africa’s load shedding, the rand weakened somewhat during the course of the week, hitting R14.91 to the US dollar, R19.29 to the British pound and R16.37 to the Euro.

Coronavirus

While two people in KZN were being monitored and tested for the Coronavirus, the Department of Health later confirmed that laboratory tests came back negative for the respiratory illness that has been responsible for the death of over 600 people globally.
