Community urged to support recreational facilities upgrade campaign
Youth lead 'kids must play' campaign
CONCERNS expressed over the lack of recreational facilities for children in Ward 26 of the uMhlathuze Municipality, have not fallen on deaf ears as a youth-led initiative known as the ‘Community Intervention Group’ is spearheading a campaign centred on ensuring youngsters have sufficient spaces in which to play.
The group’s campaign, Kids Must Play, will be launched this Saturday and community members are invited to gather at Dan’s Corner Shop in Aquadene at 10am to join the project and find out how they can contribute in terms of offering their time, skills and resources.
Driving the campaign is community youth leader Luyanda Msane, who said after noting a lack of spaces where children can play safely, the group plans on first reviving existing community parks.
The parks have not been maintained and outdoor playground equipment has eroded over the years and has not been replaced.
‘There are no recreational facilities in the parks and the children end up on the roads and drawn to mischievous behaviour and substance abuse.
‘We need to work on these spaces and call on the private sector to help us improve our parks.,’ Msane said.
‘We will visit our sport facilities and the parks and identify ways in which community members can volunteer their time and expertise by participating in projects that would be announced on a monthly basis.’
