NRB lose after conceding late goal

Most of the game was played in midfield and it was only in the last 20 minutes that Richards Bay, playing into the strong wind, were under any real pressure with new goalkeeper Malcolm Jacobs having to pull out some great saves

IN a scrappy game with few real chances, it always looked as if just one goal would be enough to seal the deal – and that’s the way it turned out.

Unfortunately for Richards Bay FC, they were the ones to concede when, with just two minutes left on the clock, Uthongathi substitute Menzi Ndwandwe prodded the ball into the net after defender Tony Zwane uncharacteristically gave the ball away.

Zwane is a terrific young player who did plenty of good things during the match, and he was inconsolable after the final whistle.

However, he can’t be blamed for the loss, which not only lifts the visitors back to pole position on the GladAfrica NFD Championship log, but also sends the NRB boys closer to the relegation zone.

Most of the game was played in midfield and it was only in the last 20 minutes that Richards Bay, playing into the strong wind, were under any real pressure with new goalkeeper Malcolm Jacobs having to pull out some great saves.

Neither side mastered the blustery conditions and the result could have gone either way had the home side been on target with a few shots that went high or wide.

Twice Siyabonga Vilane shot narrowly past the post for NRB, while Paseka Sekese put one over the top and sub Thabo Maphakisa almost equalised in extra time.

On the positive side, there was little to choose between the two sides, despite the vast difference in their log positions, and Richards Bay can face their remaining fixtures with confidence.
