Crazy office move

THE Department of Home Affairs in Richards Bay is relocating to new premises – and this is bad news for the general public.
The move from the CBD to opposite the Central Sports Complex in Veldenvlei (3 Aloe Loop) is scheduled for the period 20-31 January and is bound to be accompanied by serious service delivery problems, given the logistical magnitude of the move.

The department has recommended clients to visit either the Empangeni or Mtubatuba offices for urgent services required over this period, which will most certainly be affected by glitches as systems are transferred to the new locality.
The Zululand Observer understands that the relocation was a unilateral decision on the part of the Department of Public Works, with Home Affairs having no input into the matter.
Not only is the new building smaller than the existing premises, it is also ‘off the beaten track’ and poses serious inconvenience and danger to clients who will need to cross the hectically busy Veldenvlei traffic light intersection at Bullion Boulevard and the R619, which links the busy CBD to the N2.

The majority of those who travel to the Richards Bay hub do so on foot and many are elderly, while a large number are young mothers with children who will now be forced to walk 1.2km from Taxi City to the new offices.
Traffic passing through the intersection is notoriously undisciplined, and given the time it takes for pedestrians to walk the wide crossing, it is feared many accidents will occur.
